Using a variety of techniques and materials originating in ancient Greco-Roman culture, Alice will introduce you to the unique luminous and translucent qualities of encaustic art. You will learn to use melted beeswax mixed with Damar resin (a non-toxic tree resin) - along with pigmented encaustic sticks, oil and chalk pastels - on various papers, birch board and with a variety of collage materials. You will also learn to “fuse” your materials with a specialized heat gun, and iron your work with an iron particularly suited for the job.
We will use cradled birch board as well as other sorts of specialty papers, employing a series of steps that Alice herself developed for this medium.
